Your Iron Levels Might Be The Problem If You Are Struggling With Low Energy
What is Iron Deficiency Anaemia?
Iron deficiency anaemia is a condition that is caused by a lack of iron in the body. A lack of iron can cause symptoms of low energy, fatigue, a pale complexion and breathlessness.
What is iron deficiency anaemia?
In your body, iron is needed to create haemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells. Red blood cells allow you to carry oxygen through your blood vessels, which provides oxygen to your tissues and muscles for them to work effectively. However, a lack of oxygen to your tissues and muscles in your body will lead to them not getting enough oxygen that they would normally have.
Common symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia include:
- Tiredness and lack of energy
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
- Pale complexion
How to test for iron deficiency anaemia
If you think that you have low iron, your GP can provide a simple blood test to diagnose iron deficiency anaemia.
What can I do to help?
Treatment for iron deficiency anaemia involves taking iron supplements to increase the low iron levels in your body. Your doctor will monitor your condition during treatment until your iron levels have returned to normal.
However, iron deficiency anaemia is unlikely to be caused purely by a lack of iron in your diet, but it could be beneficial to try adding foods rich in iron into your diet:
- Dark-green leafy vegetables
- Iron-fortified cereals or bread
- Brown rice
- Pulses and beans
- Nuts and seeds
- Meat, fish and tofu
- Eggs
- Dried fruit
What are the causes of iron deficiency anaemia?
In men and women, the most common cause is bleeding in the stomach and the intestines. Iron deficiency anaemia in women can be caused by heavy periods and pregnancy. In pregnancy, iron deficiency can be caused by a lack of iron in your diet. Some pregnant women need to increase the iron in their diet or take an iron supplement. Your GP can help you to identify the cause of your iron deficiency anaemia.
Could my low iron levels be the problem?
Iron deficiency anaemia is a common problem affecting around 1 billion people worldwide. However, it can be easily treated once identified. If you think you have symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia, it is important to talk to your GP, who can discuss the best treatment options, which may involve dietary changes or medication.
